About the Game

What Is Tongits and Why Do Filipinos Love It?

If you grew up in the Philippines, chances are you've played Tongits at a family gathering, a barangay fiesta, or just on a lazy Sunday afternoon with your barkada. It's one of those games that feels like it's been part of Filipino culture forever — and in a way, it has been.

Tongits is a three-player card game that uses a standard 52-card deck. The goal is simple: empty your hand before your opponents do by forming sets (three or four cards of the same rank) and runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit). But simple as the concept sounds, there's real strategy involved — you need to read your opponents, manage your draws, and decide exactly when to call "Tongits" for the win.

At OkYaman, we've taken this beloved Filipino tradition and built it into a fast, reliable online platform where you can play against real people across the Philippines — from Pampanga to Cebu to Davao — with real peso stakes and real-time gameplay. No bots, no artificial opponents. Just you, your cards, and your wit.

How to Play Tongits on OkYaman

New to online Tongits? Here's a quick rundown of how the game works so you can jump in with confidence.

1
The Deal

The dealer distributes 12 cards to each of the three players. The remaining cards form the draw pile in the center. The dealer gets one extra card (13 total) to start.

2
Draw and Discard

On each turn, you either draw from the pile or pick up the top card from the discard pile. Then you discard one card. Keep doing this until you can form valid melds in your hand.

3
Form Melds

Lay down your sets (three or four of a kind) and runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit) on the table. These reduce the total point value of your remaining cards.

4
Call a Fight or Tongits

If another player runs low on cards, you can "call a fight" and compare hand values. Or if you empty your hand completely, you call "Tongits" — an automatic win, regardless of everyone else's score.

5
Winning the Round

The player with the lowest total card value in hand wins when a fight is called. An outright Tongits beats everyone. The winner collects the pot and deals the next round.

6
Earning on OkYaman

At OkYaman, every round you win adds real Philippine pesos to your account. Withdraw via GCash, Maya, or your bank — walang kumplikadong proseso, puro laro lang.

Card Values

Understanding Card Points in Tongits

In Tongits, the value of the cards left in your hand determines whether you win or lose when a fight is called. Lower is always better — your goal is to reduce your hand's total point value as much as possible.

Card Point Value Notes
Ace (A) 1 point Lowest-value card, very useful
2 – 9 Face value 2 = 2 pts, 9 = 9 pts, etc.
10 10 points Discard early if unneeded
Jack (J) 11 points High value — prioritise melding
Queen (Q) 12 points Dangerous to hold late game
King (K) 13 points Highest value — meld or discard fast

Cards that are laid down as valid melds count as zero points against you.

Valid Melds

What Counts as a Legal Meld?

You can lay down cards from your hand onto the table only if they form one of two valid meld types. Once on the table, those cards no longer count toward your hand value.

Three or Four of a Kind (Set)
  • Three or four cards of the same rank, regardless of suit
  • Example: Three Sevens (♠7, ♥7, ♦7)
  • Four Jacks is a valid four-of-a-kind meld
  • You can add a card to an existing meld on the table
Sequence / Run
  • Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit
  • Example: ♣4, ♣5, ♣6 — valid three-card sequence
  • Longer runs (4, 5, 6 cards) are perfectly legal
  • Ace can be used as low (A-2-3) but not high-low wrap-around
Strategy Guide

OkYaman Tongits Tips That Actually Work

Tongits is easy to learn but genuinely hard to master. Whether you're a first-timer or someone who's been playing since high school, these practical tips will sharpen your game on OkYaman.

Watch the Discard Pile

The cards your opponents throw away tell you what they don't need — and sometimes, what they're building. If someone keeps discarding low cards, they're probably trying to thin their hand fast. Adjust your own strategy accordingly.

Don't Hold High-Value Cards Too Long

Kings, Queens, and Jacks are worth 11–13 points each. If you can't meld them in the first few rounds, throw them out before your opponent calls a fight. Getting caught with a King in your hand late-game can cost you the round.

Build Flexible Melds Early

Two cards that could become either a set or a sequence give you flexibility. Don't commit to one direction too early — keep your options open until you're sure about your opponent's pace.

Know When to Call a Fight

If you have a low hand value and the draw pile is running thin, call the fight before someone else does. The timing of a fight call is one of the most critical decisions in Tongits — it separates beginners from veterans.

Chase the Tongits, Not Just the Win

An outright Tongits — emptying your hand completely — beats a fight every single time. If you're close to going out, push for it. The pot bonus for a clean Tongits win is significantly larger on OkYaman's prize tables.

Tongits Has Always Been a Filipino Game — OkYaman Keeps It That Way

What makes Tongits special isn't just the rules — it's the culture around it. The trash talk with your lolo, the suspense of watching your tita discard a card you desperately needed, the absolute joy of slamming down your last card and shouting "Tongits!" That energy is something OkYaman has tried to recreate in digital form, and our players tell us every day that it feels right.

We added features that make online play feel more social: live chat on every table, emoji reactions, and a public leaderboard so the best Tongits players in the Philippines get the recognition they deserve. Our fastest-growing community is in the Visayas region, but we see active tables being filled by players from every corner of the country — even OFWs who play from abroad just to keep that connection to home.

On OkYaman, you can start with a free practice table if you're just learning, move up to real-money low-stakes games when you're ready, and eventually compete in our big weekly tournaments where the prize pools reach into the tens of thousands of pesos. There's a clear path from beginner to champion, and we're with you every step of the way.

Deposits start as low as ₱50, so there's no reason not to try. Pick your table, trust your hand, and play the way Filipinos have always played — with heart, with smarts, and with a little bit of laslas when it matters.
